Re: How does alcohol pricing work at a bar or club?

I know bars mark up their alcohol a lot. I'm not wondering how they decide how much to mark it up by.
This question's about the differences between prices of different shots/drinks.

Re: How does alcohol pricing work at a bar or club?

We're a restaurant and we're very upfront about our prices, everything's on a menu.
But we're also a bar (open til 3am pretty much every night, DJ 4 nights a week, etc). Here's how I do it.
Markup is 500% (5X). A bit less for real pricy stuff, a bit more for the cheap stuff.

Most bars only charge for the alcohol used in the drink, and not for the mixer/s.
A rum and coke is usually the same price as a shot of rum, the coke is free.
Different alcohols have different prices. Lets take a white Russian for example, a shot of vodka, a shot of Kahlua, and sometimes a shot of cream.
Lets say vodka is $2/shot, Kahlua is $3 a shot, and cream (mixer is free).
The finished drink will usually cost $5, unless you choose a top shelf vodka, which will raise the price up by however much more the good vodka costs.

It really depends on the alcohol and the bar. We can't really tell you what a specific bar will charge.
There are expensive bars, and there are cheap bars.

Depends on the clientele, I guess.
If you were at a college bar near a more "up scale" university, you might find that the bottom-top shelf dynamic is shifted higher.
