Re: Is it considered bad etiquette for straights to go to a gay bar?

I never thought about this one way or another, but why does it matter what orientation you are?
They serve drinks, good music and a social environment just like many bars. So is there really this negative stigma about being straight and going to a gay bar?

Re: Is it considered bad etiquette for straights to go to a gay bar?

I had a gay friend explain this to me.
We straight folks go through life assuming the people around us are mostly straight; straight folks don't often wonder if the good looking man/woman at the bar is gay or straight before talking to him/her.
Gay people, particularly gay men, can't interact like that at straight bars. They'll either get shot down by straight people, or worse, like beat up.
The gay bar is one place where they like to feel like they can interact like everyone else without wondering if others are gay/straight.
Therefore, it's a big let down to start talking to an attractive person at the gay bar and get shot down because he/she is straight.
He also said not all gay people feel this way and that woman at a primarily men's gay bar is not as big of a deal.

I've had wild success with women at gay bars, but only when I am NOT trying to pick them up.
Opening conversations with women you're not hitting on is way easier anyway.

I find I'm just really good at picking up girls in general if I am either not trying, or actively trying to not pick them up. Which is incredibly frustrating.

This reminds me of an Addams Family episode, where the dad felt bad because he wasn't the worst at anything.
No matter what he tried, he was better at it than someone else. The mother resolved it by establishing that he was the worst at being the worst.
