You could argue it's depressing because it's an obviously optimistic story - in the end he realises he is the best possible of all his versions.
This may lead one to wonder what the story would be like if he was the worst possible of all his versions, or simply mediocre.
In the end I think, the story will be what you want it to be, like all stories - if you're in an optimistic mood it will be an optimistic story, if you're in a pessimistic mood, it will be a pessimistic story.
