Re: Meet yourself in a bar

I am working on a portion in a book where the protagonist meets himself in a bar.
This is not a sci-fi story, but rather a chance encounter with what will become his future.
Can anyone suggest other authors who have used this technique? Thanks!

Re: Meet yourself in a bar

I've read an interesting short story (a comic piece) by a brazilian author (Luis Fernando Verissimo) where a man meets in a bar several versions of himself, each one has taken a different turn at critical points of "their" life.

In every situation, even the the grandest opportunities only end in despair and heartbreak.

Re: Meet yourself in a bar

It's depressing precisely because he had the best possible life. Yes, he lived to his full potential, but his absolute best was mediocre.
Better to have a fantasy of glory than none at all.

Re: Meet yourself in a bar

You could argue it's depressing because it's an obviously optimistic story - in the end he realises he is the best possible of all his versions.
This may lead one to wonder what the story would be like if he was the worst possible of all his versions, or simply mediocre.
In the end I think, the story will be what you want it to be, like all stories - if you're in an optimistic mood it will be an optimistic story, if you're in a pessimistic mood, it will be a pessimistic story.
