Start with referencing something the person is wearing. clothing, watch, jewelery, style, glasses etc...
Typically, while the person is speaking to your open ended questions. They will additionally drop hints about themselves.
Stay in tune to what they are saying, and follow up with more open ended questions.

This is something I picked up on almost instantly. The social introverts, as mentioned, typically are the highly intelligent, widely interesting, compassionate and caring, once you have broken the barrier/allowed them out of their shell.
