Re: How dangerous is the red line at night here in Chicago?

Hey all. I've been a Chicago native for the past few years but for the life of me I never go at night.
That's bound to change. I have some friends visiting from out of state.
We want to go out downtown at night around 8pm or so, and the closest stop to where we will be staying (my dad's house) is the 95th/Dan Ryan stop.
My dad says he doesn't recommend taking the red line downtown, because it is very dangerous and runs through the 'hood' before it gets to downtown.

You'll be fine riding into the city at 8pm. Ride in the first car. Be sober when you leave.
Take a cab home. Split the fair. Its worth it.

Absolutely. Cab's aren't ridiculously expensive, they're quick and they're safe. Do that.

I've ridden the Red Line between 3-5am several times and between midnight and 3am countless times.
It gets a bit shady south of Jackson usually, I use that as a rule of thumb.

Same pretty much goes for walking around the streets by yourself as well.
As long as you walk like you know exactly where you're going (even if you don't), nobody will fuck with you.
