There's this local band at the Caravan that is doing a cover of my fave songs. This band's own cover is just average
though. I didn't want to listen at first because the band's a bit mediocre in its performance.

Some bands have a poor taste in music, while some are average or good. Luck be on your side if your band's playing
the music.

Can't do anything about bands' choice of music - they are invited to perform based on their availability and performance.
Sometimes the bands play our favorite tunes, others not so much. It's all a matter of chance.
