#1 – Beer

Beer goes with camping like peanut butter goes with jelly. So it’s no wonder that beer has taken the #1 spot for most popular drinks for camping. If you are car camping you can bring everything from a case of bottles to a beer keg with you. However, if you decide to do some real camping, you know like where you hike into the woods, or paddle upstream in a canoe, you will want to bring something that is a little easier to transport, like cans.

Typically 1 litre of booze will add an additional 1-pound to the overall weight of your backpack. Since everything you bring in you must also be brought out, you may find these tips to lightening your load for getting loaded very helpful:

Leave the cooler at home.
Coolers are not only unnecessary, but they can also be extremely heavy. Thankfully the great outdoors offers many ingenious ways to chill your suds:

Place your beer in a body of water. Find a place where the current won’t carry them away and your beverages will stay cold all day.

If there is no body of water around you could always use a sock. Simply wet a clean sock and put your beer inside. Hang the sock from a tree and as the water evaporates the heat will be drawn away from the beer, which in turn will cool it down.

Mix your own beer.

If you really want to save some room in your pack, you can always mix your own beer with Pat’s Backcountry Beverages (www.patsbcb.com/beer-concentrate). This powdered beer is light and easy to carry. All you need is a carbonating water bottle and some water. In no time you’ll be enjoying some freshly mixed brews.

#2 – Whiskey, Scotch and Rye

It can get cold out there in the wilderness. That’s why every camper, from the hiker to the car camper, should carry along a trusty flask of some firewater. A few sips of some good whiskey, scotch or rye and your blood will be sufficiently warmed to make it through the night.

#3 – Wine

Sure you cooked your dinner over a campfire, but that doesn’t mean you can’t class up your meal with a nice Chardonnay. A fine tetra pack of wine is a must have for any camping trip. Not only are the tetra packs easy to transport, both in and out of the woods, but best of all you won’t have to use that corkscrew option on your multi-tool pocketknife.

#4 – Cocktails

We couldn’t have a list of the best drinks for camping without including at least one cocktail recipe. And since a night around the campfire isn’t complete without having a least one round of s’mores we have come up with the S’moretini.

2 oz marshmallow vodka
1 oz chocolate liqueur
splash of half and half
chocolate syrup and graham crackers for rim
marshmallow for garnish

Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice, strain into martini glass rimmed with chocolate syrup and graham cracker crumbs and garnish with roasted marshmallow.

At the beginning of this year we decided to poke some fun at the true heroes of the party, the designated driver. And as mentioned in the top ten ways to tell who’s the designated driver, we here at the BarWhiz Blog fully support and encourage the designated driver program.

#1 – Virgin Anything

The beauty of mixing cocktails is that you can essentially have a virgin anything – just leave out the booze. Some cocktails won’t translate so well, an empty martini glass with three olives is really more canapé than cocktail, but it is virgin. So get creative and buy your designated driver the tastiest virgin cocktail the bartender can whip up.

#2 – Fancy Water

If you designated driver insists on drinking water all night why not show them you really care by purchasing them a bottle of the fanciest water the bar carries. You know the stuff, water that is harvested from the melting polar icecaps, or that natural fizzy stuff from France – your DD is just too important to have that stale, flat stuff that comes from the tap.

#3 – Energy Drinks and Coffee

Likely your designated driver is out for the long haul. A night of partying and painting the town red can become quite exhausting, especially if the only thing you have to sustain yourself is a virgin Cuba Libre. So help give your DD a boost with a powerful energy drink or a few cups of strong coffee.

#4 – Non-Alcoholic Beer and Wine

Now, if you want your designated driver to get in on the fun while still remaining sober, you can always opt for non-alcoholic beer and wine. The only caution is, although these beverages have been dealcoholized some trace amounts of alcohol still remain. Granted you would need to consume 100 beers to feel a slight buzz, but the alcohol is present nonetheless.

So without further ado, here are the top 4 Drinks To Get You In The Mood:

The Spice of Aphrodite

Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love, lust and beauty. It was said she was born of the sea and rode to the island of Cyprus on the back of a scallop shell. It turns out that scallops, just like oysters and clams, are an aphrodisiac. They contain high levels of zinc and certain amino acids that are thought to increase the libido. Add this to the sexual powers of asparagus, which is rich in potassium, phosphorous, calcium, and vitamin E, and olives, the The Spice of Aphrodite is one drink that will be certain to get you in the mood.

1.5 oz of vodka
4 oz of Clamato juice
2 dashes Tabasco
3 dashes pepper
4 dashes Worcestershire
lime wedge
sea salt for rim
pickled asparagus and olives for garnish

Rim a tall rocks glass with sea salt. Squeeze a wedge of lime and drop into the glass. Fill with ice. Add vodka, Tabasco, Worcestershire and fill with Clamato juice. Add pepper and garnish with two pickled asparagus spears and two skewered olives.

Eros Delight

Eros, the Greek god of love and sexual passion, was the inspiration for our modern day Cupid. When I think of Cupid I immediately think of cinnamon hearts. And nothing pairs better with cinnamon than apples. It just so happens these two delights are also considered to be aphrodisiacs. Cinnamon has been used to treat impotence, and apples, the forbidden fruit of temptation, are packed with vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that stimulate sexual desire.

6 oz of white wine
1.5 oz apple juice
1.5 tsp limejuice
club soda
cinnamon stick
apple slice

Combine white wine, apple juice, and limejuice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into martini glass. Top with club soda and garnish with slice of apple and cinnamon stick.

Venus Envy

Venus, Rome’s version of Aphrodite, is the Roman goddess of love, lust and beauty. Our Venus Envy creation contains, among other aphrodisiac looking ingredients, honey, which is said to contain boron, a trace mineral that helps the body metabolize estrogen, as well as B vitamins, which are used to enhance testosterone.

3 oz white wine
3 oz sparkling wine
1 oz cucumber water
1 tsp limejuice
2 teaspoons honey
chopped mint leaves

Combine white wine, cucumber water, limejuice, honey and mint leaves to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into a tall glass, top with sparkling wine and garnish with cucumber slices and mint.

Rati’s Passion

Rati, the Hindu goddess of passion and lust, basically wrote The Book of Love. With Sanskrit words like rati-karman and rati-laksha, both which translate to sexual intercourse, it is by no stretch of the imagination that the Indian Hindu text, The Kama Sutra, came to be. For our last recipe of drinks to get you in the mood we combined both basil, considered the sacred herb of India, that has been found to awaken the senses, stimulate blood flow, and relieve fatigue, with strawberries, thought to be one of the most erotic fruits on the planet.

6 oz white wine
4 strawberries
1 tsp sugar
1 sprig basil
1 oz lemon juice

Combine strawberries, sugar, basil and lemon juice into a blender. Strain into a tall glass filled with ice. Top with white wine and add strawberry and lemon slices for garnish.

Spring has finally sprung, and with the onset of the warm weather, for those of us north of the equator, it means we can finally enjoy a cold one outdoors. From outdoor patios to backyard parties one of the best places to enjoy a refreshing ice-cold drink is at an outdoor music festival.

Before we divulge the list of the most popular drinks at a music festival we’d first like to provide you with some words of caution. There are many key elements to surviving a music festival, especially a multi-day one. Remember, it’s not a sprint; it’s a marathon. So pace yourself and above all, remember to hydrate.

The majority of music festivals have a strict no outdoor alcohol permitted policy, so unfortunately you’ll have to stick with drinking what is available. #1 – Beer

By far the most popular, and most accessible drink at a music festival is of course beer. Whether it comes on tap, in the bottle or in the can no music festival experience is complete with a plastic cup of frothy goodness.

#2 – Wine

For the higher classed drinker, or just those of you that don’t like a cold refreshing beer, the second most popular music festival drink is wine. If you don’t want the dreaded black-teeth of red wine, we suggest sticking with the white.

#3 – Coolers

Coolers, whether wine, vodka or some other kind of sugar laden beverage is another popular drink for many festival-goers. Even if you don’t like coolers, at any given moment you may be Bro Iced, so be prepared and be careful out there.

#4 – Cocktails

Although not the most popular drink at a music festival, they can be the most delicious, and most dangerous. If the music festival you are attending offers cocktails, make sure you following our words of caution: pace yourself and stay hydrated.

#5 – Specialty Drinks

As alluded to, you typically don’t have too many options when it comes to types of drinks you can purchase at a music festival, so sometimes you have to improvise and create your own. With a plastic glass of beer, some ice and a can of el Jimadore (or any other premixed margarita) you can make your very own Beergarita!

Ever wonder why all those pilots signed up for that gig? They were all married. Just sayin’.

1 ¼ oz vodka
¼ oz triple sec
¼ oz limejuice or sour mix

Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice, strain into shot glass and kiss your ass goodbye.

The Ole’ Ball and Chain

‘Nuff said.

1 oz Bacardi Tropico
2 oz cold sake
4 oz Japanese green tea
splash of sour mix

Pour all ingredients into pilsner glass filled with ice. We all know you are kind of a Geisha anyway, so go ahead fancy boy, and garnish that drink with a lime wedge or twist.

Jagerade

The sun may be on the horizon but the party’s not over yet. Time to replenish some of those lost electrolytes.

8 oz chilled Gatorade energy drink
4 oz Jagermeister

Pour all ingredients into Collins glass filled with ice and guzzle back that sweet nourishing nectar.

Bloody Bull

Ah, the breakfast of champions. If your best man did his job right you’ll still be partying when 11 o’clock in the morning rolls around – or whatever time it’s legal to start serving alcohol again.

1½ oz vodka
2 oz. tomato juice
2 oz beef bouillon

Pour all the ingredients in a highball glass over ice; add a squeeze of lemon and a dash of pepper. Drink slowly, because once you’re done, so is your freedom.

#1 – Beer

Whether you serve it on tap, in the bottle or in the can, you can’t go wrong with having a full stock of beer at your house party. If you are throwing a kegger, always buy double the amount, especially if it is going to be a big party, because that draft beer doesn’t last long. A little trick to save some money but still look like you only buy the premium stuff is to start with a keg or two of the premium and then serve the low-grade suds once everyone is feelin’ fine.

#2 – Cocktails

It doesn’t matter if you make them fruity or boozey, cocktails are a staple for any house party. The best way to ensure you have enough variation is to grab your standard bar well of bottles, that’s vodka, gin, whiskey and rum (white and dark if you really want to impress your guests). Grab a variety of mix, from fruit juices to soft drinks and throw in some fresh fruit for garnishes. Also, if you don’t have an ice machine at home make sure you purchase a couple of bags of ice – and it is probably not a bad idea to have a blender on hand either.

#3 – Shots & Shooters

Another staple of the house party is shots and shooters, so make sure you add a few liqueurs to your shopping list as well. In addition to your cocktail liquors, to make some of the most popular shots and shooters you will need tequila, amaretto, goldschlager, jagermeister, sambuca, and various flavours of schnapps. However, by far the most popular shooter at any party is the famous Jell-O Shooter, so don’t forget to stock up on some J-E-LL-O.

#4 – Punch

They say a proper punch contains at least five ingredients, one of which is sweet, one is sour, another is strong, the other is weak and the final one is spiced. You can’t go wrong with serving punch at a house party, and best of all it is a great way to serve a lot of people easily and affordably.

Strip & Go Naked

1 case of your favourite beer
26 oz bottle of rye
26 oz bottle vodka
26 oz bottle spiced rum
8 cans of frozen pink lemonade
crushed ice

Combine all ingredients in a large vessel such as a ‘clean’ garbage can, mix well and serve in classic red cups. Stripping and going naked is optional.

Besides being able to pour a proper pint, every bartender should have a solid backing knowledge of the most popular drinks. Not every patron knows what they want to order and those that do know want it made the way it is supposed to be. Of course there are hundreds of drinks a bartender SHOULD know, but we’ve decided to go with the classics. Here’s a quick rundown of the most popular drinks every bartender should know.

#1 Cosmopolitan (aka – Cosmo)

Thanks to the ladies in Sex and the City, every middle-aged woman out on the town thinks it is not a complete night until they have consumed a multitude of Cosmos.

1oz vodka
½ oz triple sec
½ oz lime juice
½ oz cranberry juice

Chill a martini glass. (add ice, water) Shake the vodka, triple sec and cranberry juice in a shaker with ice. Empty the chilled glass, strain the contents from the shaker into the martini glass and garnish with a wedge of lime.

#2 Classic Martini

The martini can keep it dry or wet, clean or dirty, infused with apples or bacon. There are literally hundreds of variations of the martini these days with the production of flavoured vodkas and creative bartenders. Anyone who has ever seen a James Bond movie knows that he prefers his martini made with vodka not gin, and shaken not stirred. Keep it simple. There is a reason it is a classic after all.

2 ½ oz gin
¼ oz dry vermouth

If someone really knows their martini, they will certainly be the first to tell you how they prefer it prepared. If not, follow these and you will be safe. Toss a handful of ice cubes into a mixing glass adding the gin and vermouth. Stir or shaken (as denoted). Strain into a martini glass and finish with a skewer of olives or a twist of lemon peel.

#3 Bloody Caesar

There is a Bloody Mary and there is a Bloody Caesar. If you are a bartender you know the difference. If you don’t know, then you are not a good bartender. I prefer to build mine from the ground up, and why not be a little dirty about it too (extra Worcestershire).

Here is my personal recipe:

1 oz vodka
7 dashes Worcestershire sauce
3 dashes Tabasco sauce
pinch of salt & pepper
4 oz Clamato juice

Rim a tall rocks glass with celery salt. Squeeze a wedge of lime and drop into the glass. Fill with ice. Add vodka, Worcestershire and Tabasco sauce, and fill with Clamato juice. Bang salt & pepper shakers over the top two times. Garnish with a wedge of lemon & lime, a dash of horseradish and two skewered olives.

#4 Shirley Temple

Unfortunately the world is populated with people who do not imbibe alcohol but still like to pretend they enjoy a cocktail from time to time. It is also a standard for children at restaurants who want to feel like adults. Every bartender should know how to whip up a Shirley Temple.

2/3 cup lemon-lime soda or ginger-ale
2 tbsp grenadine
1/3 cup orange juice

Fill a tall rocks glass with ice. Add the soda, grenadine and juice; still until combined. Classic garnish is an orange skewered with a maraschino cherry.

#5 Screwdriver

Every woman loves them and men cannot get enough of them at Sunday brunch with the family.

1 oz vodka
½ cup orange juice

Fill a small rocks glass with ice. Add vodka and juice.

#6 Cuba Libre

If you had trouble with the Screwdriver, then this is probably going to throw you for a spin. Seriously. If you did not know what this is, if you even have to read what a Cuba Libre is, then please quit your job as a bartender.

1 oz white rum
½ cup coca-cola

Fill a small rocks glass with ice. Add rum and coke. Garnish with a wedge of lime.

 
We’re not talking about the classic Adventures of Bob & Doug McKenzie. These strange brews aren’t used for evil mind-control purposes, although they may alter your perception. The strange in these brews are all about the names.

With the rise in popularity of microbreweries, as well as craft and homemade brews, there are some pretty strange sounding beer names on the market. Here are just a few of them:

#1. Arrogant Bastard Ale

Produced by the Stone Brewing Company out of Escondido, California, this 7.2% abv this aggressive ale was actually banned in a few states due to its profane language.

#2. Monty Python’s Holy Grail Ale

This 4.7% Holy Grail of ale was brewed by the Black Sheep Brewery out of North Yorkshire, England. It was released in 1999, just in time for the 30th anniversary of Monty Python. in 1999.
Ten years later on the 40th anniversary Holy Grail is still going strong. It’s a full-flavoured hoppy golden ale with dry finish – just like their humor.

#3. Buttface Amber Ale

The Big Horn Brewing Company out of Washington brews this American-style amber ale. Drink too many of these bad boys and you may end up butting your face against the wall… or worse, the floor.

#4. He’brew: The Chosen Beer

This San Francisco brewing company, Shmaltz Brewing, brews a number of different beers under their He’brew: The Chosen Beer line. Types include Origin Pomegranate Ale, Funky Jewbelation, Messiah Nut Brown Ale, and Genesis Ale. Nothing like a cold refreshing beer with a smooth aftertaste of blasphemy.

#5. Moose Drool – Brown Ale

Big Sky Brewing out of Missoula, Montana has a few interesting names for their line of beers, with the strangest by far being Moose Drool. Using four different varieties of both malts and hops, this brown ale is surprising easy drinking at 5.1% abv. But if you have too much of it, the Moose isn’t the only thing that is going to be drooling.

#6. Face Plant Winter Ale

The Nelson Brewing Company brews this certified organic winter ale out of British Columbia, Canada. At 6.5% abv, this may be the first beer that can predict your future – after consuming too much of it that is.

#7. Hoptimus Prime – India Pale Ale

Considered a Double IPA, Ruckus Brewing Company’s Hoptimus Prime uses five different hop varieties, and three different types of malts, which results in a very hoppy beer. Now Autobots, roll-out!

#8. Yellow Snow – India Pale Ale

Your mother always said, ‘Don’t eat yellow snow’, but she never said anything about drinking it. Rogue Ales out of Newport, Oregon brew this IPA that is golden in color and hoppy in flavor.

#9. Moylan’s Kilt Lifter – Scotch Ale

At 8.0% abv, this scotch style ale will blow the kilt off even the most robust of beer drinkers. Produced by Moylan Brewing out of Novato, California, they suggest their Kilt Lifter is best enjoyed if you let it first warm slightly in your glass. A beer that strong, I don’t think it will have a choice.

#10. Old Leghumper

Akron, Ohio is home to the Thirsty Dog Brewing Company who have quick an extensive selection of beers, 16 to be exact. Although the names range from Irish Setter Red to Barktoberfest (you get the theme), the strangest name bay far is their robust porter, Old Leghumper. Using two types of roasted malts, Old Leghumper is a rich porter with a chocolaty taste.

#11. Pigs Ass Porter – Porter

This little piggy went to the bar, and this little piggy went to a club. This little piggy picked up another little piggy and this little piggy went “wee wee wee” after drinking too much of Harvest Moon Brewing Compnay’s Pigs Ass Porter. With plenty of body, this porter is brewed with four different kinds of malts creating a creamy, smooth, slightly chocolate tasting brew that even Orwell’s Napoleon would enjoy.

#12. Polygamy Porter

The Wasatch Brew Pub in Park City, Utah is responsible for brewing this dark, medium bodied brew with a hint of chocolate and malty flavors. At only 4.0% abv, when it comes to Polygamy Porter why just have one!

D’oh! There is no longer the need to make the choice between glazed donuts and vodka. Duff Beer might have a run for its money.

Bacon Vodka

Beer = good. Bacon = good. Beer + Bacon = epic!

Smoked Salmon Vodka

First Palin now this. Thanks Alaska.

Wasabi Infused Vodka.

Of course, we can layer this on top of the salmon vodka and voila! You’ve got yourself a Sushitini.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Vodka

You know what time it is, don’t ya? It’s peanut butter jelly time, peanut butter jelly time , peanut butter jelly time. Now where he at, where he at, where he at. Now there he go, there he go, there he go. Peanut butter jelly peanut butter jelly peanut butter jelly… well you get the picture.

Cotton Candy Vodka

This vodka reminds me of my youth. Spending the summer at the local carnival, with the smell of cotton candy wafting from food vendors and the reek of Vodka from the carnies. Ah, nostalgia.

Snake Vodka

Surprise, it’s Snake Flavored Vodka, made with real snake! Okay, we couldn’t let the researchers get away without having at least one gross drink.

After breaking a personal record at the gym, or reaching that perfect BMI, here at the BarWhiz Blog we understand that, every once in awhile, even the healthiest of health nuts deserve a little reward time at the bar. Don’t panic; there is no need to fret about all those empty calories or bloated beer bellies, as there are many health conscious ways to still party it up.

Water Water Everywhere

Alternate drinking water between booze throughout the night. You should try to drink at least one glass of water for each alcoholic drink you consume to help flush out the toxins and avoid that hangover that could interrupt your morning jog.

Avoid The Dreaded Munchies

Always eat before you go out. Fill up on your favorite healthy meal and then hit up the town. Going out on an empty stomach will not only impair you more quickly, but those end of the night greasy chilli cheese dogs could become even more appealing.

Stick To One Drink

This should apply to everyone. If you’re switching between shots, blended drinks, wine and beer, you will not only lose track of how many empty calories you are consuming, but also how much alcohol as well.

Say No To Sugar

Veer away from ultra sugary drinks such as anything made with soda, juices and especially energy drinks. All these mixes contain loads of empty calories and refined sugars.

Nurse It

No no no, not that kind of nurse. Nurse your drinks and make them last by drinking them slowly with lots of water in between. As we mentioned in other posts, when it comes drinking think of it as a marathon, not a sprint, and pace yourself.

Just Don’t Do It

So now that we’ve given you some tips on how to drink with your health and figure in mind, we’ve come up with a few recipes on what to drink:

#1 Cucumber & Lemon

1 cucumber
6 oz water
1-2 lemons
3 oz vodka
ice

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a rocks glass and garnish with a wedge of cucumber.

#2 Cranberry & Blueberry Martini

1/2 cup fresh whole blueberries
4 oz cranberry juice
1/2 oz lemon juice
3 oz gin
1 cup ice
1/2 oz of honey
orange curl for garnish

Shake all liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice, strain into highball glass, garnish with orange curl, and serve.

#3 Mango Margarita

1 oz mango juice
1/2 oz lime juice
1.5 oz tequila
3 oz filtered water
1/2 oz of honey
1 cup ice
slice of pear for garnish

Shake all liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice, strain into rocks glass, garnish with slice of pear, and serve.

#4 Kiwi Mint Lime

20 mint leaves
2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
4 small to medium sized kiwis (peeled)
1 tablespoon of honey
4 oz of light rum
2 oz water

Muddle kiwis in a cocktail shaker. Combine remaining ingredients and shake, strain into a cocktail glass, and garnish with a slice of kiwi.

#5 Pineapple & Banana Spiked Smoothie

1 whole pineapple
2 frozen bananas
6 oz lemon juice
6 oz vodka
garnish with chocolate mint

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a coctail glass and garnish with a sprig of chocolate mint.
