Mongolia is famous for their horses, but that fame goes much farther than just for riding them. Mongolians also milk them, and this sweet horse milk is turned into an alcoholic beverage called Airag.
Once the mare’s milk has been collected it is stored in a container made from the stomach of a cow or from horsehide, where it is then hung outside of the entrance to a yurt. Here it will sit to ferment until it becomes a tasty beverage with about 5% alcohol content.

Airag has so much potential in modern western bar culture that we just had to experiment with this amazing beverage and come up with five classic cocktails with a horsey twist…
Airag Drink Recipes:
Ingredients:
2 oz vodka
1 oz coffee liqueur
fill with Airag
Directions:
Pour vodka and coffee liqueur over ice cubes in an old-fashioned glass, fill with Airag and serve.
Ingredients:
1 oz cognac
1 oz crème de cacao (brown)
1 oz Airag
nutmeg for garnish
Directions:
Shake cognac, crème de cacao and Airag in a cocktail shaker half filled with ice, strain into chilled martini glass, garnish with nutmeg and serve.
Ingredients:
1 oz vodka
1 oz Bailey’s® Irish cream
1 oz Frangelico® hazelnut liqueur
1/2 oz Airag
Directions:
Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice, strain into an old-fashioned glass, and serve.
Ingredients:
1 oz Galliano
1 oz crème de cacao (white)
1 oz Airag
Directions:
Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice, strain into chilled martini glass, and serve.
Ingredients:
1 oz crème de menthe (green)
1 oz crème de cacao (white)
1 oz Airag
Directions:
Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice, strain into chilled martini glass, and serve.
