Top 5 Eco Friendly Bars in the USA

Green living, eco-friendly

Eco friendly bars are a slowly growing trend all across the United States and the world. There are many factors to being considered eco friendly, from waste to construction to the actual food and beverage products themselves.

1) Hopworks Urban Brewery in Portland, Oregon

Hopworks Urban Brewery

Hopworks is the absolute epitome of being environmentally friendly. Everything they do in some shape or form is in an effort to contribute to remaining green. From the basics of organic home brewed beer to energy efficient lighting and piping, their entire building is green. In fact, their tasting bar is made completely out of recycled materials. They have even installed a system to use runoff from their gutters to provide irrigation for their gardens and plants.

2) Standing Stone Brewing Company in Ashland, Oregon

Standing Stone Brewing Company

This brewery/restaurant goes the extra mile in every aspect of their company philosophy. From plant based to-go forks and knifes to recycling 100% of their paper used to recycling and composting about 20% of all garbage they encounter. They have their own farming operation for organic goods used on the premises, and this even includes a rooftop garden of herbs, fruits, and vegetables. The company even went as far as to purchase some hybrid bikes to assist their staff on remaining green on their daily commute to work.

All materials are recycled when possible, and the eco-footprint is kept to a minimum.

The Pick Up Line Worked… Now What?

Eyes Wide Shut Party at Macao Trading Company

Many good men are failing miserably using “pickup lines” on woman these days. That’s because even the wittiest pickup lines will almost always sound canned and inauthentic –two traits that are sure to turn away any intelligent, self respecting woman.

That being said, this post is not about why 99% of “pickup lines” fail; nor is it about how to cope with the embarrassment that comes after your line bombs, badly. This post is about what to do when the pickup line actually works… so now what?

You’re at a bar with a buddy and you see a cute girl sitting with her friend across the room. You take a few minutes to assess the situation, think about a game plan, and conjure up the confidence to go talk to her; but what do you say when it comes to the cold approach?

Do you steal a pickup line from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air and say: “Baby write down your number before I don’t want it no more!” Or do you go with something a little less presumptuous like: “My desire for you is like diarrhea, I just can’t hold it in.”

To be sure, both these lines will probably have you escorted out of the bar like a fool in no time. Either way, you know you have to make conversation with this girl…and fast, before someone else does. So you and your wing man go over and approach the two girls; you walk tall and assume a friendly smile. Once eye contact is made you move in and say (with a slightly humorous tone): “Did you have lucky charms for breakfast? Because you look magically delicious!” The girl laughs out loud, looks at her friend and then back at you and exclaims: man I could really go for a bowl of those right now!

You’re speechless… It worked; your pathetic pickup line actually worked and she wants to continue the conversation. Now what do you do? Here’s the answer:

Focus on the three F-bombs. That’s right, keep it Fresh, keep it Fast, and keep it Fun. If you employ these three F-bombs you might be able to build enough rapport to actually have a first date (or even take her home that night).

1) Fresh

flirt

Keep it fresh by talking about new and exciting experiences and adventures in your life; let her in on the details of your life and ask her questions about hers (although don’t ask too many questions as you might turn her off by seeming “too” interested).

2) Fast

salsa chemistry

Don’t hum and haw about the same things or dwell too much on one topic (unless of course you’re both totally enthralled by it, a sign of good things to come.) Once conversation has been steady for a few minutes, change things up, add some variety to the situation: ask if she wants to dance, challenge her to a game of pool in the bar, show her some cool photos on your phone. The key is to keep her guessing and keep her entertained.

3) Fun

103742511

And last but not least, keep it fun. Cyndi Lauper knew what she was talking about when she wrote the song “Girls just want to have fun.” I mean, who doesn’t want to have a good time and meet new people, right? Crack some jokes, tease her about little idiosyncrasies you notice (careful with this one, though); you might also want to involve her friend(s) in the conversation if you feel that things are getting too intense with just the two of you. Oh, and be sure to listen, don’t embarrass yourself by making her repeat herself.

If you can remember to employ the three F-bombs, you might just get to share a bowl of lucky charms together in the morning.

Ten Weirdest Bar Restrooms

Whether you call it a bathroom, restroom, washroom, lavatory, or any other of the long list of names for the potty, one thing remains the same; these rooms are evolving to a much larger and greatly wackier state of existence. The bathroom is not a simple toilet, sink, and mirror. It is now a statement, a message, or merely an opportunity to release artistic imagination in a room that is seen by everyone, at one point or another, who visits the establishment. Bars are quickly becoming notorious for these eccentric bathrooms. Here is a list of ten of the largest or strangest restrooms from all corners of the world.

1. Bar 89 – Bar 89 is located in New York City. This is a state-of-the art restroom equipped with clear glass stalls that will frost when the stall door is shut. Customers must trust the stall walls to remain opaque in color and provide them the privacy they need while in the stall; a bathroom for technology lovers and believers.

2. Zeta Bar – Zeta Bar is located at the Hilton in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The urinals in this men’s bathroom are ornamented with beautiful women paying close attention to what is happening around them. The walls are comical, but it is the ego-boost that most men do not mind repeatedly receiving.

Zeta Bar at Kuala Lumpur Hilton Toilets.

3. Monteith’s Brewery – Monteith’s Brewery is located in New Zealand. These restrooms do not offer the typical toilet that most of us are accustomed to; instead bathroom goers will do their business into a keg. Now isn’t that appropriate, a brewery with keg toilets? This bathroom is quite ironic as customers urinate into the very same place that made them need to go to the bathroom to begin with.

Dunny can

4. The Rivershack – The Rivershack is located in New Orleans. The restroom is bizarre, but it does obtain quite a reaction from customers. With a body outline on the floor of the men’s restroom and a trough for a urinal, what is there left to say?

Carrollton NOLA Doors Bathroom Floor

5. Vampire Bar – Vampire Bar is located in Barcelona. This bar’s restroom is home to a large tiger monument that emits water like a fountain. The sculpture is undeniably a work of art that is worth a glance.

6. Safe House – Safe House is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and is one of the most amazing spy-themed restaurants that includes passwords, hidden rooms and disappearing ink throughout the restrooms. Just to get into the restroom a patron must make their way through a variety of different mazes and avoid trick doors.

Safehouse Puzzle Wall

7. Dolce and Gabbana’s Gold Room – Located in Milan, Italy this very vibrant and gold restroom has been the host to such guests as Giselle, Paris Hilton and Kylie Minogue. It’s one of the most luxurious restrooms anyone can ever step into as it has just about everything anyone would ever need while going to the restroom.

8. Columbia Tower – Located in Seattle, Washington this amazing bar restroom really takes things to a higher level by being on the 76th floor. This restroom has it’s own personal view of the Seattle skyline.

9. Haunch of Venison – This spectacular old school pub is located in Salisbury, England. This very unique place has some interesting antiques and all sorts of different items to keep people guessing. They even have an 18th-century mummified hand upstairs.

The Haunch of Venison

10. La Kiva – This interesting bit of awesomeness is located just outside the Big Bend National Park in Terlingua, Texas. La Kiva is built into a cave on Terlingua Creek and is decorated all around with random animal bones put together to create some very unique and fantastic animals.

5 Types of guys you’ll see picking up women at a bar

Bar Friends

Guys love bars for one reason: women. Well, the hi-def TVs that are permanently tuned to sports channels are also nice. Also, there’s nothing like devouring grease-laden bar food after a few ice cold drafts…okay, okay, guys like bars for many reasons. Women, however, are a top priority. In any bar you will invariably see five types of guys on the prowl for female, ahem, “companionship.”

1. The Alpha Male

Mighty Maru the Alpha male...

The Alpha Male is the most notorious of all guy types. He has studied books that promise to reveal the secrets of picking up women. He can be identified by his confident swagger and superior attitude. He can also be spotted when, inevitably, a woman turns him down. He will show an expression of puzzlement as he realizes that all of those books and websites were a scam designed to suck up his paycheck.

2. The Bro

Grease

These guys spend countless hours applying hair gel and the cloud of cologne that hangs around them, if ignited, could level a city block. Bros are most often found in noisy bars. The loud noise will prevent a woman from realizing that she is talking to a man who spends more time primping in front of the mirror than she does.

3. The Pseudo-Intellectual Hipster

THOR IS A HIPSTER

The Hipster is more common now than ever before. They constantly smoke hand-rolled cigarettes, wear glasses without lenses and sport mustaches that haven’t been in style since the Civil War. They aren’t likely to pick up any women because they refuse to drink anything other than cheap beer. Women are not impressed when a Hipster offers to buy them watered-down swill.

4. The Big Shot

bagmoney Pictures, Images and Photos

This guy has it all. He shows up in a sports car and flashes cash. He will be quite successful with the ladies. He will buy them expensive cocktails and offer them a ride in his flashy car. However, as soon as he brings a lady home, she will quickly discover that he’s got the money, but all of it is spent to compensate for other, ahem, shortcomings.

5. The First Timer

Photobucket

You’ve got to give this guy some credit. He is trying, after all. When he approaches a woman, one of two outcomes are possible. She will either quickly brush him off or be charmed by his effort. Upon his first romantic success, his shyness will disappear and he will rapidly transform into one of the above categories. It’s a vicious cycle.

So, there you have it. The next time you’re at a bar, keep an eye out for these fellows. Odds are that you can size them up quickly. What you do with this information is, of course, up to you.

The Great Nightlife (and life) in Bath

Nightlife in Bath

Bath is a spectacularly beautiful city which stands on the River Avon among the hills of England’s West Country. The city’s compactness and striking architecture – Roman baths and sweeping Georgian terraces – combine to produce one of the most elegant sights in Europe.

The ancient Celts, who first inhabited this area, believed that Bath’s hot springs were sacred, but it was the Romans who built the temple and the famous baths – now restored to their original grandeur.

If all Bath had to offer was some incredible nightlife, a vibrant student scene, hundreds of very talented local DJs and a modest but wonderfully varied selection of pubs, clubs and bars then it would be a pretty cool place to live – dry during the day, sure, but alive at night.

Sadly, that’s not the case.
Bath is pretty magical in the daytime too.
Take a wonder up Milson Street under the Christmas lights, crash out at Royal Crescent on one of those belting hot summer’s days or just while the hours away with a coffee sitting by the river – Bath, on the face of it, has got ‘it’.

Bath City

Go out and discover that amazing night out, that band you can’t get enough of, that little bar where they had to kick you out to clean up, that cafe you never dreamed would exist down that little side street.

Bath is a phenomenal place to take up that sport you’ve always thought would be kind of  fun but you’ve never tried, the place to get that Saturday job you’ve fancied for a little  while; it’s the place to discover yourself academically and personally.

Bath really does just keep on giving. You’ll love your first year, everyone does, but you’ll  love your second year even more and after that, well, you’ve still not seen it all. Bath  could be that great place to study or a place to discover, learn and find out exactly what you’re about; the place where you had so many amazing times and met so many amazing people.

Bath could be your home from home or…just become home.
Whatever ‘it’ is, make sure you enjoy it…

Pubs and Bars:

Back To Mine

The one complaint of Back to Mine is that its front door does it little justice. Inside has to be seen to be believed! Normally a funkier, more soulful venue than Bath’s other clubs, Back to Mine is free from Monday to Thursday and, if you get hooked, its well worth becoming a member on the Facebook page – the discounts are good value.

Lamb and Lion

Allegedly the Lamb and Lion is the place to find Bath’s cheapest pint. All the features you would want from your local; pool tables, beer garden, TV screens and a decent selection of beers, wines and cocktail pitchers. It’s an ideal place to start the night

Parade Bar

The Parade Bar is a party bar, populated year round with students. Food is served all day, there’s a variety of cheap snacks and meals and best of all cheap drinks. Right on the Bath University campus, it’s merely a stagger back to your accommodation. Open until 2am on Friday’s – it’s a night out not to be missed!

The Boater

The Boater is as good for a Sunday afternoon Guinness curled up in front of the footy as it is for a long summers evening overlooking the weir in the beer garden. It’s always lively, particularly on rugby days but is always a good place to catch the big match.

Moles

Name any half decent band from the last twenty years and they have probably played Moles.
It really is the place to go for indie-rock and upcoming bands with live acts several times a week. When there’s no music Moles is a favourite with clubbers, the obligatory ‘Cheesy Tuesdays’ is a big hit, as are The Snugs who play reggae, funk and soul on a Friday night.

The Miser’s Guide To Clubbing

Clubbing 2

After reviewing countless bars and clubs all over the world, we know how easily going out for just one beer can quickly turn into a $200 bar tab.

Hitting up the clubs can be particularly expensive when you factor in cover charge, coat check and the inflated cost of drinks. Thankfully we’ve learned a thing or two on how to save a few bucks when at the clubs. Some tips may obvious, some unorthodox, but they all work.

So without further adieu, here is the Miser’s Guide To Clubbing:

#1 – Pre-Party

Pre-partying is essential for any night out at the clubs. Walking in stone cold sober is one way to ensure your budget gets blown within the hour. So invite over some friends, have a few drinks and get ready for the night. If you are going out solo, and are the type that doesn’t like to drink alone, never underestimate the power of a shower beer. They’re so good you might even want to bring two.

#2 – The Early Bird Gets The Worm

One way to save a little money, and ensure that you will get into the club, is to arrive early. Sure, this might mean that you have to start your pre-game drinking a bit earlier, but since most clubs don’t get started until after 11pm you’ll have plenty of time. Be one of the first to arrive and you will likely get in without having to pay cover.

Choose your beer!

#3 – Never Pay (Full) Cover

One of the biggest burns to your budget is the cover charge. Going early might be able to save you cover entirely, but if you don’t want to be that guy, you might consider travelling in a pack. Many clubs will offer a discounted rate if you bring your whole entourage with you. It’s always best to call ahead to negotiate the price before you get there. The more women you have in your group, the more likely you will be able to get in.

#4 – Leave The Coat At Home

Most clubs have a mandatory coat check, and depending on the time of the year, a coat may be essential to your survival. If you can, leave the coat at home, or in the car of a designated driver. Failing that, try to double your coats up on one hanger and save a bit of money. For the ladies, a big purse and a thin jacket will work wonders.

Beer Bottle Cap Assortment

#5 – Where Everyone Knows Your Name

One of the best ways to save money is to become a regular. Get to know the staff and the owner. Becoming a friend will help you to get in on the busy nights, usually without having to pay cover. The wait staff and bartenders may even buy you drinks, or at the very least, have a heavy hand when they are pouring them.

#6 – Cash Only

If you really want to save some money you should only bring cash and your ID, leave all plastic at home. Never, I men never, use the ATM machine inside the club. In some instances you can end up paying up to $10 in ATM fees each time you make a transaction. And when you are buzzed, taking out extra money may seem like a good idea at the time, usually more than once in the night. It’s also best to stick to the budget you set for yourself and try not to borrow cash from that friend who always seems to have a little too much cash on hand.

#7 – Special Of The Day

Do a little research and find out which clubs have specials, whether they are Ladies Nights, happy hours, two-for-one drinks or just specials on specific brands. Drink on the cheap and you can drink longer for less. And if you are a guy on Ladies Night you can always ask the ladies to buy you a few rounds.

#8 – Price Is The Difference

The fastest way to blow through your cash budget is to order drinks without knowing the prices. It’s not uncouth to ask for a price menu before deciding on what you want to drink. Knowing where your money can be best spent to maximize your alcohol intake will help you to stretch out the night further.

Beers of the World

#9 – Keep It Simple

Now that you’ve seen the price list you’ll quickly understand that the simpler the drink usually means the cheaper the price. Unless there is a special on certain drinks or alcohol, domestic beer is typically the cheapest way to go, and draft even more so. If you are not a beer drinker, always order from the rail when ordering spirits.

#10 – It’s A Marathon, Not A Sprint

Even if it is a two-for-one special you should always pace your drinking. These specials work in benefit of the club, the more you drink the faster you will forget about your budget and the more money you will spend. Remember, you have the whole night, so pace yourself and interject a bottle of water between every other drink. Not only will you save money, but also your body will thank you for it in the morning.

#11 – A Shot In The Dark

If you really want to blow through your money then order shots. Heck, buy a round of shots for everyone at the bar with you. But if you really want to save your money, then just stick with beer or whatever cocktails that are on special.

#12 – Be One Of The 10-15%

This may be counterintuitive if you are trying to make friends with the wait staff, but one of the easiest ways to save money at the club is to not tip, or at least not over tip. If you can, try to start a tab. If they won’t let you start a tab without a credit card then be careful with your tips. Tipping $1.00 with every beer purchase can quickly add up. If your beer is $4.00 that is a 25% tip, generous, but not needed. A tab will enable you to leave a tip of 10-15% on your total bill, but if you are unable to open a tab try calculating the amount of money you will spend in the night and leave the full tip at the beginning. Not only will that help you to curb your tips, but the move may also impress the bartender enough that you won’t have to wait for a drink the rest of the night.

Grandpa's Beer
#13 – Disappearing Act

When out with a group of friends one of the hardest things to do is leave early. No one wants the party to stop and you’ll usually be browbeaten into staying to have just one more. This quickly turns into another round, and before you know it you’ve closed the bar once again. In order to avoid this extended bar tour and save some money learn how to pull a Houdini. Simply disappear, apologize for it in the morning or send a text message while you are in the cab on the way home. Going home early is not a sign of weakness, your body, and your wallet, will thank you for it in the morning.

Additional Tips

  • For the guys: Try not to buy drinks for the girls, and definitely stay away from those girls who will only use you for drinks.
  • For the girls: Use men for drinks.

What A Girl’s Makeup Says About How To Approach Her In A Bar

80's Makeup

If you are not heading out to a sports bar with the boys, or knocking back a few pints at the end of a hard week’s work with your co-workers, then this weekend it is definitely time to hit up the clubs. The weather is nice, and with the warmer temperatures the ladies will be ready to strut their stuff.

When it comes to hitting on the ladies at the clubs, there are many how to’s available all over the internet, from one-liners to pick-up lines, with some offering good advice and others, well, terrible advice.

In reality, a girl tries to make it easy of us guys to let us know how to, or even if we should, approach her at a club. From the clothes she wears, to her hairstyle, and even her make-up, girls are always giving us guy’s subtle little clues if they are interested in us or not.

Check out these five common make-up styles and how they relate to they way you should approach her at a bar or club:

#1 – Smoky Eyes

look5

She wants to look smouldry and sexy at the same time, and the smoky eyes style does the trick. So what does this heavy use of mascara mean for you? Approach With Caution. The smoky eyes could be out just to show how hot they think they look, and really only be in the mood to see how many guys they can turn down. Only approach if you get the invitation first, all it takes is some eye contact and a smile, unless of course you are feeling adventurous and are packing an iron-clad ego that you don’t mind getting dented.

#2 – Fresh-Faced Look

look4

With the girl-next-door look you are likely in for a girl who is not only very sweet and kind, but also someone smart that appreciates intellectual conversation. The ole one-liners won’t work here, even if said ironically. Although she’ll understand the irony, it probably won’t impress her. You’ll have to bump up your game here and prepare to dazzle her with your knowledge of current events.

#3 – The Barbie

look2

With her hot pink lips, the Barbie is out to have a good time tonight. You’ll either find her getting down on the dance floor or hear her laughing at the bar. Only approach this girl if you know how to have fun. Keep the conversation light and silly and if you can make her laugh you should have no problems at all.

#4 – O’Natural

look3

The o’natural style is a girl who is not only confident but also down to earth. Whether she is wearing very little or no make-up at all, this girl knows she is attractive, and really, that it was just simple luck of genetics. Although everyone loves to be complemented, hearing how beautiful she is from strangers really isn’t going to impress her, especially since you are not the first and definitely will not be the last. As with the Smoky Eye, wait for the invitation before you approach. The best approach would probably be an indirect one, for example, asking her opinion about something.

#5 – The Seductress

look1

Although it may be hard to differentiate between hot pink lips and bright red ones on the dance floor, the Seductress is definitely not the same as the Barbie. Sure, they are both out looking for fun, but the Seductress knows exactly what she is looking for, and is not afraid to get it. Since she will be flirtatious, and likely have her eye on someone already, this approach may be a little difficult. If her eyes are somewhere else and she continues to give monosyllabic answers it’s best to move on. If she’s into you, you’ll know it.

For the girls that use make-up to lure guys in, I stumbled upon this very informative video from Makeup Geek.com that I thought you might enjoy:

How To Make A Killing As A Bar Server

Four

Although a tight fitting tank top and a pair of orange short-shorts won’t hurt, showing some skin isn’t the only way to make a killing as a server. When it comes to making great tips, whether you work at a bar, a club, or a restaurant, it all boils down to one thing, the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Although simplistic, the ethic of reciprocity encompasses the concept of the hospitality industry as a whole. So simply put, in order to make a killing as a bar server, just follow the Golden Rule. If that simplified explanation is a little too vague for you, maybe this 18-step guide will help to shed a little light:

Step #1 – Introduction

After you guests are seated, the first thing you should do is introduce yourself to your table. Give them your name and make them feel welcome. Although this should go without saying, many servers neglect to do this simple step. Not only will it make your guests feel welcomed, but also if you should provide excellent service, they will remember your name and ask for you the next time they visit your establishment.

Step #2 – Eye Contact

Fresh pair of eyes

Your first impression is always the most important, so besides making sure you are neat in appearance, during your introduction it is very important to keep eye contact with your guests. Not only does it show confidence, but it also makes the guests feel that they have your undivided attention.

Step #3 – Smile

Not too gummy of a smile

This should go without saying, but even if you are having a bad day, your smile is one of the most important things you have in your arsenal. No one wants to deal with a grumpy server, so keep it light and show them that you are happy to be there, even if you are not.

Step #4 – Menus

You Wanna Take My Picture!

Menus can get dirty, so before you had them to your guests make sure they are clean. Hand them out individually, starting with the children’s menus first, followed by the eldest female at the table and then everyone else.

Step #5 – Quality Check

setting

Depending on the type of environment where you work, you may not have a chance to do quality check of the table. Therefore , you should not only ensure that it is clean while you are introducing yourself, but that it is also set properly. If anything is missing, or looks low, make sure you replace or replenish it right away.

Step #6 – Drink Orders

Self-Serve

After you have introduced yourself, quality checked the table and handed out the menus you’ll want to take drink orders. Many times your guests will be thirsty, so be prepared; they may already know what they want. Drink orders can take some time to be filled, so while you are waiting it is a good policy to return to the table with water for your guests immediately after the drink order has been placed. Don’t forget, a slice of lemon on a glass of water can go a long way.

Step #7 – Specials

After you have taken the drink orders, but before you leave the table, make sure you explain what the specials of the day are and ask your guests if they have any questions about the menu.

Step #8 – Know The Menu

IMG_2231

This is probably the most important aspect of serving. Servers who are familiar with the menu, to the point that they know what each dish is comprised of, will almost immediately earn a higher gratuity, especially from those guests who are concerned about what they eat. By having the knowledge to quell the concerns of your guests, and readily answer any of their questions, your confidence in your knowledge of the menu will help put their worries at ease.

Step #9 – Upselling

"WingHouse", Clearwater, FL - Aug, 2011

Many restaurants encourage upselling, and although it can be a great tactic to increase the amount of a bill, thereby increasing your overall gratuity, many times upselling can sound forced and unnatural. Remember the Golden Rule here, if you yourself would not appreciate the upsell than you should not try to push it on your guest. Upsells are usually best given before the guest has made up their mind, so after dropping off the drinks and before coming back to take their food order, mention the upsell items at that point.

Step #10 – Taking Orders

Taking the Order

Listening skills come into play here, and it is very important to listen to what a customer orders, especially with those customers that are concerned about food allergies or make multiple modifications. Although there are many schools of thought on how to properly take orders, specifically if you should write them down or not, it is at your own discretion what you feel most comfortable with. Whether you are going to do it by memory or write it down, it is extremely important to repeat back the order to customers. Wait until the entire table has finished ordering and then repeat the order in full. It looks very impressive if you can do it by memory. Orders should always be taken from the eldest lady at the table and then working clockwise. When customers are ordering appetizers, never assume that they will be shared or that they want them with their meal, always ask how and when they would like it served.

Step #11 – Quality Check Food

final touches

Always quality check the food before bringing it to the table, especially in the case of customers with food allergies or modifications. The server is the last line of defence before the food is brought to the customer, so make sure you do your due diligence and confirm that the meals are correct.

Step #12 – Serving Food

Lunch in Maastricht

In a best case scenario all your for orders will be ready at the same time without any mistakes, so when serving your guests, just as with order taking, the meals should always be served to the eldest lady at the table and then clockwise from there. If you are able to, serve from the right. Ask to make sure everything is okay and if they would like anything else. This is a good time to check drink levels as well. If anything looks low, ask if they would like to replenish it. In the case of water, make a note and come back to fill their water glass.

Step #13 – Refilling Drinks

Pouring

When it comes time to replenish drinks, such as water, coffee or tea, never refill the drinks over the table. Not only is it dangerous, as you may spill hot liquid on a guest, but it can also be intrusive. Always remove the guests glass to refill it.

Step #14 – Two-Bite Rule

Nom nom nom

In most cases, a guest will know if they like their meal within the first two bites. Give them a few minutes to get settled in before heading back to check on them. If something is wrong with the meal you do not want to make them wait for you to return. Although it may be impossible to time it, try not to show up at the table mid-mouthful. If anything is wrong with the meal take responsibility for it, apologize and rectify the issue as quickly as possible. In the case of things like hair, spoiled or undercooked food, voiding the dish from the bill is recommended. The two-bite rule goes for all courses of the meal, from appetizers to desserts.

Step #15 – Clearing

Dishes should only be removed when everyone at the table is finished, a caveat of course being if a guest asks you to remove their dish. Not unlike serving, dishes should always be cleared from the right, however the order is unimportant. This goes for both appetizers and mains.

Step #16 – Dessert

ecstasy

A dessert menu should always be offered, and in many cases it is customary to bring the dessert menu to the table and let the guests decide. First ask them if they would like any coffee or tea, paying particular attention to what they would like with it, be it milk, cream sugar, lemon or honey. Let the guest mull over the dessert menu while you are filling their drink order.

Step #17 – Handling The Bill

The Hands Signing the Check

When it comes to the bill there are many factors to take in mind, firstly, when to bring the bill. In most cases you let the customer ask you to bring it. Never assume that after their main course, or even dessert, that they are finished for the evening. They may want to add a few more drinks or even another bottle of wine, so patience is the key. That being said, many guests want to leave immediately after they have finished their meal, so ensuring that you make yourself available to them is the best way to go. Always ask how they prefer the bill; never assume that it is one bill. Split the bill according to your guest’s wishes, and if they only want one bill, never assume who is paying for it. The best tactic here is to place the bill in the middle of the table. Finally, offer to process the customers payment in the manner of their choosing, and in the case of cash, always bring back exact change. Unless they ask you to take it, always wait to the customer leaves before you retrieve the bill.

Step #18 – Thank Your Guest

Once the bill is paid that does not necessarily mean your guests are no longer under your watch. In the case of guests finishing up their drinks, you should continue to check in on them and attend to their needs. When they are ready to leave you can ask if they need any help, hailing a taxi, putting on their coats, etc – above all, make sure you thank them for coming.

This 18-step guide is just that, a guide. Following it won’t guarantee bigger tips, but it will definitely ensure that you will at least receive the minimum. Personality will help you to get a higher gratuity, so remember the Golden Rule and always strive to go above and beyond when it comes to your level of service. If you do it right, your tip may even look like this:
