Top Ten Ways To Tell Who’s The Designated Driver

Beer! Now cheaper than gas! Drink, don't drive!

It’s the time of year for holiday parties, New Year’s parties and just old fashion get-togethers. Here at BarWhiz we love a good party – you should have seen our office party last week, woo-wee! I don’t think those interns will be coming back next semester.

Anyway, we are all about the party, but we are also a strong advocate of drinking responsibly and of course always having a designated driver – whether you call a taxi, take public transit, or God forbid, call your Mom on Christmas Eve to come pick you up from the bar (long story) – drinking and driving is never a good idea. Not only do you run the risk of losing your license, but more importantly, when you get behind the wheel drunk you endanger the lives of everyone around you, including your own.

Although we fully support and encourage the designated driver program, we still like to take the time to poke fun at those who lost the bet, or the rock-paper-scissors toss, and ended up being the one to abstain for the night.

So without further adieu, here are the top 10 ways to tell who is the designated driver:

#10 – The only guy who doesn’t want to drive to the girl’s college, the Playboy Mansion or the Lost City of Gold.

#9 – The only guy in the whole bar who is drinking a Shirley Temple.

#8 – The only guy who keeps ordering virgin Vodka and Red Bulls.

#7 – The only guy who is not telling everyone how much they love them.

#6 – The only guy who hasn’t fallen off of his barstool at least once.

#5 – The only guy who isn’t trashing the bar.

#4 – They only guy who thinks it’s not a good idea to dance on the table.

#3 – The only guy who hasn’t passed out at the bar.

#2 – The only guy that is not trying to start a fight.

#1 – And the #1 way to tell who is the designated driver: They will always tell you.

All fun aside, having a designated driver is extremely important, and here’s an infographic from TotalDUI.com that explains why:

Most Popular Christmas Party Drinks

Even the Grinchiest of Grinches and the Scroogiest of Scrooges’ ice-cold hearts thaw just a little bit when it comes to getting together with friends for a few holiday drinks. Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, from the second to third week of December, and well into the New Year, it is a great time to attend or even host a holiday party.

I’ve been to some pretty amazing parties where the host serves an elaborate themed menu, showing of their incredible culinary skills, however where many parties have failed is when it comes to party drinks. Typically BYOB (bring your own bottle) is expected.

It’s understandable of course, after all who really can afford to both feed and supply alcohol to all of their friends around this time of year. However, being able to supply some creative drinks alongside the incredible food would just blow your guests away.

The affordable solution: create a drink menu and assign each guest a particular bottle or ingredient to bring with them. Here are some of our favorite Christmas Party Drink recipes to add to your drink menu:

#1 – Eggnog

What is Christmas without a glass or two of everyone’s favorite treat – eggnog! Whether you purchase it from the store or make it from scratch, everyone loves a little eggnog each year, especially when it’s spiked. Since eggnog is our #1 pick for the most popular Christmas party drink we will not only provide you with a recipe to make homemade eggnog, but we’ll also provide you with two boozy variations. Think of it as our Christmas present to you.

· Simple Eggnog Recipe (Serves 20)

1 dozen eggs
12 oz white sugar
2 quarts milk
2 quarts whipping cream

Separate egg yolks and set whites aside for latter use. Combine egg yolks and sugar in a mixing bowl, add remaining ingredients, mix well and chill in refrigerator. Before serving whisk egg whites and fold into mixture.

· Brandy Eggnog

1 oz brandy
½ oz dark rum
8 oz eggnog
whipped cream
ground nutmeg
cinnamon sticks

Shake brandy and rum in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Strain into a mug, add freshly made eggnog, top with whip cream and garnish with nutmeg and cinnamon sticks.

· Eggnog Martini

1 ½ oz dark rum
3 oz eggnog
almond extract
ground cinnamon
ground nutmeg
cinnamon stick

Shake rum, eggnog and almond extract in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Strain into martini glass rimmed with cinnamon. Garnish with nutmeg and cinnamon stick.

#2 – English Christmas Punch

This Christmas punch is enough for 27 glasses, and best of all it is served on fire! Caution should be taken when igniting the punch; you don’t want to end up with a Griswold Christmas tree.

26 oz dark rum
26 oz dry red wine
24 oz strong tea
1 lb superfine sugar
juice of 1 large orange
juice of 1 lemon
orange slices

Combine wine, tea and the juice of one lemon and orange into a saucepan. Warm the mixture, being careful not to boil. Pour into heatproof punch bowl. Add sugar to a large ladle allowing excess sugar to enter punch bowl. Pour rum over ladle until sugar is saturated. Ignite the rum and sugar mixture carefully pouring into punch bowl. Stir to extinguish flames, add remainder of rum and orange slices for garnish.

#3 – Mulled Beer

Far be it from me to tell you how to drink you beer, I am after all a proponent of warming up with a cold one, but sometimes it’s nice to offer your guests a warm drink. This holiday recipe, which serves 20 of your closet friends, creates a warm and spicy twist on the traditional Christmas beer.

10 bottles of dark ale
5 egg yolks
5 tsp white sugar
2 tsp nutmeg
cinnamon sticks
10 cloves
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp ground ginger

Combine beer and spices in a large saucepan and heat until ground spices dissolve. Mix sugar and egg yolks together and add to spiced beer ensuring to stir well. Pour into beer mug and garnish with nutmeg and cinnamon stick.

#4 – Hot Buttered Rum

Speaking of warming up with a warm one, this buttery treat is the perfect drink to hand your guests as they enter into you home from the frigid outdoors.

1 ½ oz of brandy
½ oz dark rum
1 Tbsp unrefined brown sugar
1 Tbsp white sugar
1 Tbsp unsalted butter
8 oz water
cloves
ground cinnamon

Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and warm on low heat. Works best if you make multiple cups at one time. Pour mixture into mugs and garnish with ground cinnamon

#5 – White Christmas

For those guest who wrinkle their noses to the though of eggnog, surprise them with this alternative. The additional flavors do a good job of masking that eggnog taste for those not so inclined.

1 oz Southern Comfort
½ oz white chocolate liqueur
4 oz eggnog
chocolate flakes

Shake all ingredients a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Strain into martini glass and garnish with chocolate flakes.

#6 – Poinsettia

This elegant cocktail is made with Champagne, or sparkling wine, which will add a touch of class to any holiday party.

3 oz sparkling wine
½ oz triple sec
3 oz cranberry juice

Combine triple sec and cranberry juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Strain into a Champagne flute and top with sparkling wine.

#7 – Candy Cane

Here’s a fun cocktail to make for those that have a peppermint tooth – they are easy to spot, as they are the ones always stealing the candy canes off of your tree.

¾ oz berry flavored vodka
¾ oz peppermint schnapps
¾ oz white crème de cacao
¼ oz grenadine
half and half
soda water
candy cane

Combine vodka, peppermint schnapps, white crème de cacao, and grenadine into a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a martini glass rimmed with crushed peppermint candy. Fill with half and half, top with soda water and garnish with a candy cane.

#8 – Merry Christmas

Last but not least, here at the BarWhiz Blog we would like to wish you a Merry Christmas with a cocktail of the same name.

1 oz gin
1 oz cranberry juice
1 tsp lemon juice
club soda
fresh cranberries

Shake gin, cranberry and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Strain into a Collins glass filled with ice, top with club soda and garnish with fresh cranberries.

Top Hangover Cures

Here at the Barwhiz Blog we’ve given you plenty ideas on how to have a great night out. From the best party cities, to the best drink recipes, to even the best drinking games.

But after all that fun what about the next morning? Don’t think that we’re just going to leave you hangin’.

We’ve compiled a list of the very best in hangover cures to aid in the effects of an amazing night out, but before we can even begin to cure our hangovers, we should first take a look at what exactly a hangover is:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A hangover is the name given to the sickness following a night of heavy alcohol consumption. (In fact the name hangover itself was once called veisalgia, a Norwegian word for “uneasiness following debauchery”).

Symptoms of a hangover include physical effects such as headaches, nausea, diarrhea, sensitivity to light and sound, weakness, muscle cramps, fatigue, dehydration and an increase of heart rate and blood pressure. In extension to these physical symptoms, psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression and a poor sense of well-being may also be felt.

Now that we have a better understanding of what we’re up against, let’s look at some helpful fixes and then a few false remedies:

Water

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The most effective way to relieve the symptoms of a hangover is through the steady intake of water. For every drink you consumed the night before drink one glass of water the next day. If you want to lessen the effects before they happen, mix in a glass of water between every alcoholic drink you have the night of.

Sports Drink

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Sports drinks can help you to replenish any lost electrolytes if you have become too dehydrated, but you have to be careful about which sports drinks you consume. Those that contain caffeine will actually be counterproductive as caffeine is a diuretic just like alcohol. If you have the option between water and a sports drink, it’s best to stick with the water.

Eggs

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It’s not the greasy spoon breakfast special that will help to cure your hangover, but just the eggs alone. This is because eggs contain a compound that actually helps to break down alcohol induced toxins in the body.

Fruit

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Fresh fruit is packed full of all the essential vitamins and nutrients the body needs after a long night of slowly poisoning yourself. The nutrients in fruit will help to get your body of toxins, and one of the best fruits to do this is:

Bananas

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Since alcohol depletes the body of potassium, which in turn can cause many of your hangover symptoms, one of the best ways to replenish your body’s supply is with a banana.

Painkillers

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Although some painkillers, like aspirin and ibuprofen, may reduce the severity of a hangover headache they will in fact increase the intensity of any gastrointestinal pain you may be feeling. One painkiller, acetaminophen, should never be taken as a hangover cure as alcohol can actually increase its toxicity.

Hangover Myths:

Hair of the Dog

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This term “the hair of the dog that bit you” refers to drinking more alcohol to get rid of your hangover. In reality this tactic only prolongs your hangover and increases its power. Also it makes you an alcoholic.

Greasy Food

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

We all crave that greasy plate of ‘acon and beggs the morning after a night of partying, even though we know it will only make us feel worse. Ironically enough, greasy foods may actually help to lessen the effects of a hangover if they are first consumed before drinking.

Coffee

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

As previously mentioned, caffeine is a diuretic, so although coffee may be our go to beverage in the morning, it in fact increases the effects of a hangover by dehydrating you further.

Burnt toast

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The idea behind this myth is that the carbon in the burnt toast can act like a filter and help to filter out the toxins left in your body after a night of binge drinking. It couldn’t be further from the truth.

Over the counter “hangover cures”

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

If I have to explain to you that there is no such thing as a miracle in pill, then my friend, I’m afraid that you may still be drunk.

Best Party Cities In Australia

As you may already know, our winter (the northern hemisphere) is Australia’s summer, so there really is no time like the present to take a trip down under. Since we’ve already provided you with some of the best party cities all over the world, today we thought we would focus the land of Oz.

Don’t forget that you can also click on the city names to see listings and reviews of bars and clubs in that area. Feel free to stop by and review some venues yourself if you have the chance, or leave us your thoughts below.

#1 – Gold Coast

Gold Coast, Australia

From Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach, Australia’s Gold Coast is bespeckled with high-rise buildings, theme parks and neon lights, giving it the feeling of a city that could very well be the offspring of a boozed fuelled hook-up between Miami and Las Vegas. The somewhat glitzy and glamorous overtones mix well with the brash and tacky undertones. The city makes it work however as more than 2 million partiers visit the area every year. So if you find yourself unsure of where to begin your Australian journey, Queensland’s Gold Coast is the best party city to begin your adventure.

#2 – Sydney

Sydney City Night HDR

Although many people may assume that Sydney, Australia’s most populace city, is the country’s capital, they would be wrong – that honour is bestowed to Canberra, whose population by the way is just a little over 350 thousand inhabitants. Sydney with over 4.5 million people is the BarWhiz Blog’s 2nd spot for the best party city in Australia. If you are looking for some all night dance parties head over to Kings Cross. Or if the laid-back pub scene is more to our liking you can’t go wrong with The Rocks, and if live indie music is more your thing, Newtown and Surry Hills is the way to go.

#3 – Melbourne

Melbourne, Australia by night

Even though it is said that Melbournians know how to party harder than Sydneyites, Victoria’s capital city ranks in as our #3 pick. Packed with lounge bars and more live music that you can shake a drumstick at, Melbourne has many well-known party spots, such as St. Kilda. However it’s the not-so-well-known secret locations where you will really have the time of your life. Since the locals are a little more laid back here than in other cities in Australia you may get lucky and be invited to buy a round of beers at some of these secret party spots.

#4 – Brisbane

The big-little city of Brisbane is a perfect starter city for those partiers that come from smallish towns. It may have the big city look, but it is the small town community feel that really makes Brisbane a great spot to party. With trendy clubs and posh wine bars, not to mention a booming live music scene, Brisbane is home to some of the most down-to-earth partiers in all of Australia. Some of the best areas to visit include, Fortitude Valley, the West End and Kangaroo Point.

#5 – Cairns

USS Blue Ridge Sailors man the rails as the ship pulls into Cairns, Australia

Rounding out our top 5 is Cairns. This backpacker’s haven is not only a really good place to party – if you are young and don’t mind things a little down and dirty that is – but it is also cheap. How cheap you ask? Well if you’ve ever been backpacking you know how frugal you have to be with your budget and Cairns answers that need with such specials as 5 drinks for $12! Some of the great party stops in include, the Woolshed, PJ O’Brien’s, Shenanigans, and of course Gilligan’s.

BONUS – XXXX Island
Strawberries and Cream

Not really a city, or destination for that matter, but XXXX Island is a real beer drinkers’ paradise. Situated on the southern Great Barrier Reef, this beer oasis, or beerasis to coin a term, is the idea of one Beer Company’s perfect getaway. Queensland’s favourite beer, XXXX Gold, has created this getaway as a thank you to their loyal customers, and only about 1000 people get to visit the island each year. Since the only way to get there is to win, when you are partying it up in the BarWhiz Blog’s Top 5 Australian Party Cities, make sure to pick yourself up a case or two of XXXX Gold. You’re allowed to bring three mates with you, so if you win don’t forget to send us an invite.

Most Popular Drinks To Serve At A House Party

Whether you are trying to save money, or are just getting tired of the club scene night after night, weekend after awesome weekend, the classic house party is always a fun and inexpensive alternative to going out.

We’ve already given you the Complete Guide For Throwing A House Party and reviewed the
Most Popular Drinking Games, so today we will provide you with the Most Popular Drinks To Serve At A House Party.

#1 – Beer

Beer Keg

Whether you serve it on tap, in the bottle or in the can, you can’t go wrong with having a full stock of beer at your house party. If you are throwing a kegger, always buy double the amount, especially if it is going to be a big party, because that draft beer doesn’t last long. A little trick to save some money but still look like you only buy the premium stuff is to start with a keg or two of the premium and then serve the low-grade suds once everyone is feelin’ fine.

#2 – Cocktails

Cocktail

It doesn’t matter if you make them fruity or boozey, cocktails are a staple for any house party. The best way to ensure you have enough variation is to grab your standard bar well of bottles, that’s vodka, gin, whiskey and rum (white and dark if you really want to impress your guests). Grab a variety of mix, from fruit juices to soft drinks and throw in some fresh fruit for garnishes. Also, if you don’t have an ice machine at home make sure you purchase a couple of bags of ice – and it is probably not a bad idea to have a blender on hand either.

#3 – Shots & Shooters

jello shot

Another staple of the house party is shots and shooters, so make sure you add a few liqueurs to your shopping list as well. In addition to your cocktail liquors, to make some of the most popular shots and shooters you will need tequila, amaretto, goldschlager, jagermeister, sambuca, and various flavours of schnapps. However, by far the most popular shooter at any party is the famous Jell-O Shooter, so don’t forget to stock up on some J-E-LL-O.

#4 – Punch

Punch

They say a proper punch contains at least five ingredients, one of which is sweet, one is sour, another is strong, the other is weak and the final one is spiced. You can’t go wrong with serving punch at a house party, and best of all it is a great way to serve a lot of people easily and affordably.

Since a BarWhiz drink post isn’t complete without at least one recipe, we’ll share with you our favourite punch:

Strip & Go Naked

Pink cocktails

1 case of your favourite beer
26 oz bottle of rye
26 oz bottle vodka
26 oz bottle spiced rum
8 cans of frozen pink lemonade
crushed ice

Combine all ingredients in a large vessel such as a ‘clean’ garbage can, mix well and serve in classic red cups. Stripping and going naked is optional.

Newcastle mixes the excitement of London’s electronic music scene with Brighton’s live music scene, all within a Manchester budget. In other words, it is a great place to party on the cheap and the reasoning for its inclusion on BarWhiz’s best party cities in the UK list.

What To Do When You Have Too Many Empties

Beer Store

Just the other day I happened to walk past the local Beer Store delivery truck and noticed their new logo, “We were green before green was cool”. I bet the hipsters just loved that one.

I know I’ve been ‘recycling’ my beer bottles, well ever since my very first beer – everyone always remembers their first. In fact, back in my first year of college, my roommate and I saved up all of our empties and cashed them in to fund a year-end kegger, but not before we first built a throne out of them. Oh college.

Throne

So I wondered, what do others do when they have too many empties? Here are just a few examples that I found:

#1 – Beer Bottle Temple

If you have ever enjoyed a Trappist beer, then you know how much monks love their suds. Some even go so far as to say that they invented beer, but we know today that beer has a much older history than when Benedictine monks began brewing it in the 6th century. Whatever the case, this group of Buddhist monks in Khun Han, Thailand found a very creative way to use up their unwanted empties – they had over one million of them – and built the Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew, also known simply as the Million Beer Bottle Temple. Kinda’ puts my throne to shame.

#2 – Beer Bottle Chandelier

Beer Bottle Chandelier

This beer bottle chandelier is a unique piece of beer bottle art that most likely graces that finest beer bottle mansions in the land. Well actually it can be found at ‘On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina’ in Los Angeles, California, but we do have a beer bottle house coming up next.

#3 – Beer Bottle House

Calico Glass House

Located in the former mining town of Calico, California, this now historical landmark ghost town is the home of the Calico Glass Bottle House. Although it was not an original structure of the mining town, it was built to show that miners typically used what they had handy to build homes in the desert. And after a hard day of mining silver, there’s nothing like knocking back a few hundred bottles of beer.

Another great find is Grandma Prisbrey’s bottle village in Simi Valley, California.
In the website it’s written “Bottle Village is a one-third acre site covered with an assemblage of shrines, wishing wells, mosaic walks, structures and follies constructed primarily from discarded glass bottles.”.
They have great photo galleries of the place, here’s a picture (click on it to see one of the photo galleries):

#4 – Beer Bottle Sculpture

TsingTao beer bottle statue

Located on the famous Beer Street in Qingdao, China, is a sculpture made entirely from Tsingtao beer bottles. The sculpture actually forms the character 九 that has the same pronunciation as part of the characters that make up the word beer.

#5 – Beer Bottle Lamp

The finished lamp

For those of us without the architecture background that it would take to create a beer bottle building there is always the option of making a lamp. However, it does only take one bottle, so I’m not quite sure what you’ll do with the other 23 of them… ah yes, bring them back for a refund and turn them in for more beer.

Casas de Botellas

It is not beer, but if you’ve read so far and still interested in the bottle house trend,
know that in South America there are several countries with bottle house building projects.
Check out Casas de Botellas, a project dedicated to helping the poor have a place to live by building houses made of bottles, along with other materials often referred to as garbage.
