Five Ways Bars Get You To Part With Extra Money

Going out to party can be expensive. We all know this. Not only are drinks more expensive to purchase at a bar or club then they would be to buy at the liquor store and drink at home, but drinking establishments seem to find ways to make you part with extra money all the time.

Is it greediness or just pure capitalism at its finest? Either way it sucks to be on the receiving end of price gouging. So if you are going to go out to party, and lets face it, sitting at home drinking can only be so much fun, then beware of these five ways that bars get you to part with extra money:

Cover Charge

Oh cover charge. Not only are drink prices marked up exponentially, but also the fine drinking establishment owners want to further gouge you before you even enter the bar. I guess the cover charge is their way to prepare you for the expensive night ahead. If you are like me and don’t like to pay cover charge, check out tips #2 and #3 of our Miser’s Guide To Clubbing.

Coat Check

After shelling out $5 to $10+ already you are now in the bar, but before you can even think about getting a drink you have to pass the next gatekeeper. Yes, I’m talking about the coat check girl. Many bars, and especially clubs, have a mandatory coat check rule, and even though you have already paid cover, some clubs want a little more money before they let you buy a drink. Is it fair? I don’t think so. That’s why you will see the #4 tip on the Miser’s Guide To Clubbing is to leave your coat at home.

Oh, and don’t forget to tip the coat check girl, especially if she has a funny tip jar, otherwise she may accidentally misplace your coat…

***BONUS TIP***
Any time you are required to check your coat you will receive a coat check stub. These things are super easy to lose, especially after a few rounds. Most coat check policy states that if you misplace your ticket you will have to wait until the end of the night to retrieve your coat. In order to avoid this situation use your cell phone and take a picture of your stub, that way if you lose it you have a backup.

ABM Machines

Anytime a bar or club has one of those non-banking institution affiliated ABM machines you know you are going to be in for a real price gouging. As the image above shows, the owners of these terminals are pretty much allowed to charge whatever they like. I’ve seen some as high as $15! The worst part about these machines is that many times the owner of the club also owns the machine. Gouged again and you still haven’t gotten your drink. Check out tip #6 at the Miser’s Guide To Clubbing for some ideas on how to save money.

Bottle Service

By no means a mandatory charge, but bottle service is another way a bar will try to get you to part with extra money. Since everyone wants to be a VIP many clubs now cater to your narcissistic desires. For $140+ (and that’s on the cheap side of things) they will provide you with a bottle of vodka, some mix and a private section of the club so you can feel extra VIP. Oh, you’ll also have to pour the drinks yourself, so you are kind of paying out of your own pocket to work at the club. Again, it is not a mandatory charge, but for the same cost, if not lower, you can simply order your drinks at the bar like everyone else and best of all, have a professional make them for you.

The Upsell

Oh no, not the dreaded upsell. From the simple Do you want fries with that? to extended warranties on your gadgets, lets face it, no matter where you go, you are constantly being offered the upsell. Bars and clubs are no different: “Do you want the 16-oz or the 20-oz draft?”, “Vodka Martini? Do you want Grey Goose?”, etc. Now that you have finally paid your way into the bar and are ready to order a drink, don’t be afraid to ask for a price list. This will help you avoid the dreaded upsell and make a more informed decision on what to order.

10 Coolest Ice Hotel Bars

Whether it is located inside a tree or under the sea, let’s face it, there are some pretty interesting places around the world where one can kick back and have a drink. Some of the coolest places to warm up with a cold one this winter are in the bars of these 10 amazing ice hotels.

Igloo Village – Saariselka, Finland

After partying it up at Igloo Village’s ice bar, the Hotel Kakslauttanen features a different take on the traditional ice hotel by offering a variety of igloos to sleep it off in. Whether you choose the thermal glass igloo, or the more hardcore snow igloo, you’ll be sure to awake feeling refreshed. And if the previous night’s cocktails are still making you feel a little slow and sluggish you can always sweat it out in the morning with a sauna.

Snow Village – Kittila, Finland

Sister to Igloo Village is Finland’s Snow Village. Where the former gives you the option of rooms from man-made materials, Snow Village is completely made out of ice and snow, and lots of it! Covering an area of approximately 220,000 square feet, Snow Village is made up of 1650 tons of snow and 330 tons of ice. But don’t worry if the thought of all that snow and ice is making you cold, you can always warm up with a few cold ones in the famous Snow Village Ice Bar.

Icehotel – Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Billed as the largest ice hotel in the world, Sweden’s Icehotel is comprised of over 30,000 tons of snow and ice. Boasting 60 rooms and an amazing ice bar it is no wonder that the small village of Jukkasjärvi sees some 50,000 guests each winter.

Bjorli Ice Lodge – Bjorli, Norway

The Bjorli Ice Lodge is the largest ice hotel in Norway. Built each year within the Dovre-Sundalsfjella National Park, each room is uniquely created by local artists. If the cold rooms aren’t really your thing, they also offer a number of warm rooms for the more timid guests. Either way, stopping by the ice bar for a few nightcaps is highly recommended.

Kirkenes Snowhotel – Kirkenes, Norway

Situated not too far from the Russian border in Norway’s sub-Arctic north is the Kirkness Snowhotel. The hotel has been in operation since 2006 and consists of 20 differently themed rooms. The ice bar alone takes up to 15 tons of ice to create each year.

Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel – Alta, Norway

Norway’s third most popular ice hotel, and the world’s northernmost one, boasts 30 rooms, an ice chapel, and an incredible ice bar complete with a full set of ice glasses. This 2000 square meter ice hotel has been built each and every year since it first opened in 2000.

Ice Hotel – Balea Lake, Romania

One of the world’s most remote ice hotels is situated high in the mountainous region of Romania. Although it is only accessible by cable car and can only accommodate a small amount of guests, since only 10 to 14 rooms are constructed each winter, Romania’s ice hotel, and especially the ice bar, is by far one of the coolest places to have a drink.

Engelberg-Titlis Igloo Village – Engelberg, Switzerland

At an altitude of 5,900 feet, Switzerland’s Igloo Village provides some of the most spectacular view of the Swiss Alps. Some of the igloos even come complete with your very own private whirlpool, which is a great way to relax before bed after spending the evening pounding back a few in the ice bar.

Hôtel de Glace – Quebec City, Canada

Hôtel de Glace was first built in 2001 on the shores of Lac-Saint-Joseph and has since been relocated to just outside Quebec City’s Old Town. With no permanent structures of any kind, Hôtel de Glace is entirely made out of snow and ice – 15,000 tons of snow and 500 tons of ice to be exact. So if you plan your visit too late in the season, remember you’ll have to drink fast, because once they ice melts that bar (and glassware) will be no more.

Snow VillageMontreal, Canada

Just a few hours west of Quebec City is Montreal’s very own take on the ice hotel called Snow Village, which is a snow and ice replica of the very city it is built in, Montreal.
If you know anything about Montreal, they have some pretty good bars, and Snow Village’s ice bar is no exception. The official opening for this year’s Snow Village is planned for January 18th 2013.

Best Nightlife in Spain

Elegant architecture of Madrid
Madrid

Following on from the BarWhiz guide to Europe, here’s a look at what the Spanish have to offer, from beers in the city to cocktails on a Mediterranean island. This guide is brought to you by Polly Allen, a travel writer on Spain with easyJet Holidays.

Major Cities

Madrid, being the capital city of Spain, has some of its best-loved bars, so choose your district wisely. La Latina has a student/hippy vibe, especially in bars such as Barrio Alto, whilst Huertas is popular with tourists but will generally cost more. The most famous place for cocktails is on the iconic main street, Gran Via, and is called Museo Chicote. Film stars and writers have been here, so why not follow in their footsteps?

Museo chicote
Museo Chicote

Seville’s Cerveceria Internacional is a haven for beer lovers, and a beer is una cerveza. Choices on tap include Leffe and Guinness, or you can enjoy a Spanish cider (Escanciador). If you’re going for bottled beer then there’s everything from Chinese (Tsingtao) to Czech (Budejovicky).

Cervecería Internacional

Barcelona is full of cool places to visit, but its rooftop bars must surely be worth a mention. The Zinc Bar, on the roof of the Hotel Villa Emilia, has free Wi-Fi, an amazing terrace with large sofas, and a tempting wine list as well as mojitos to die for. Alternatively, the Hotel Pulitzer Bar is a good choice for those who can afford to splash the cash on elegant €12 cocktails.

Hotel Pulitzer Barcelona

Balearics

Majorca is an ever-popular nightlife destination for good reason: in Magaluf alone there are over 100 bars, many of which have a theme. The BCM Sports Bar is a good place to start thanks to its range of shots, beers and cocktails next to a giant TV screen for watching those sporting events, followed by a stay at the nearby Marina Barracuda Hotel, which has a cool BCM-themed entertainment area. If you’re more into classic drinking then don’t miss Ginbo in Palma, which has more than 100 different types of gin – just don’t try them all at once.

Ibiza’s Raco Verd, in San Jose, has been running for fifty years and doesn’t fail to impress, even today. Enjoy cleansing and refreshing juices such as the SOS by day and then upgrade to tapas and wine as the night falls, accompanied by the sounds of acoustic guitar performances. If you want something a bit livelier then try La Cava, which is a chic night spot in Ibiza Town with amazing decor.

Menorca’s many watering holes include Mambo, with its signature Mojito proving a favourite with tourists, and Jazzbah, which is a trendy bar and club that is perfect for catching up with friends over a few drinks in the chill out room or listening to DJs playing live sets.

Canary Islands

Fuerteventura is home to Agua, based in Corralejo, which comes highly recommended by tourists and locals. Expect to pay no more than €5 per cocktail and enjoy light tapas-style snacks with your drink – free of charge. The hot cocktails are certainly worth sampling.

Gran Canaria has plenty of cheap bars, but blogger Victoria (known as the Cunning Canary) advises you to go upmarket if you want recognisable branded drinks. Try the bar of the Soultrain Jazz Club in Las Palmas for excellent music and live jamming sessions as you enjoy a glass of something cool.

Lanzarote’s hotspots include La Esquina, which has half an hour of free Wi-Fi for everyone who buys a drink, and the bars around the Rubicon Marina such as Global House and Afrodite Little Italy, which has a wide range of wine.

Best of the Rest

Puerto Banus Marbella Spain yachts
Marbella

Marbella is a more expensive place to visit in Spain, thanks to its glitzy nightlife and gorgeous beaches which the cast of the hit reality TV show The Only Way is Essex have popularized. Bars to try out include The Champagne Room (for the obvious tipple) and The Library, which has over 250 types of alcohol.

The Library Bar

Valencia’s Montaditos Gratis will appeal to those of you needing to save your Euros. Small beers come with a small tapas selection and start from just €1,30, which is very wallet-friendly. At that price you can afford to be a bit more adventurous with your choice of drinks.

San Sebastian, in the north of Spain, has bars to suit all budgets, many of which either contain a version of tapas known as pintxos or huge bocadillos (baguettes) to accompany your drinks. Juantxo Bar is a bit of a student favourite thanks to its cheap food and beer, and look out for its special caipirinhas.

Now you’ve seen the line-up, the hardest part is choosing which resort to visit first…

The Newbie’s Guide To Surviving A Bar Brawl

Fight Club

Here at the BarWhiz blog we talk a lot about the best party cities, the best cocktail recipes, and even the best way to pickup a girl in a bar. Seeing as all three could very well be a recipe for disaster, alcohol sometimes brings out the worst in people, today we are going to talk about the best way to survive a bar fight.

#1 – It’s A Marathon, Not A Sprint

1 – It's A Marathon, Not A Sprint

In other words, pace yourself with your alcohol. We all know that the sauce can do crazy things to some people, and although you may be a happy drunk the guy sitting next to you might be the complete opposite. Your good natured sarcastic comment could very well land you in the middle of a bar brawl, so if you pace yourself, you may have an advantage against your opponent.

#2 – Walk Away

walking out the door

Probably the best way to survive a bar brawl is to not get into one in the first place. Sometimes that can be easier said than done, but if you have the ability to do so, just walk away. Bar fights typically stem from some sort of intoxicated misunderstanding, so be the bigger person and leave. Just make sure you don’t turn your back on the hostile drunkard as you do so.

#3 – Use Your Powers Of Reasoning

Funny Pictures

Although not the easiest thing to do when dealing with an over-agitated, hypersensitive, intoxicated individual, but if you are unable to walk away try using your powers of reasoning before the fists, or bottles, start to fly.

#4 – Seek Help

4 – Seek Help

If your gift of the gab is getting you nowhere, you still have another option to save your hide before it comes down to fisticuffs. Bar staff is used to dealing with intoxicated and aggressive individuals, and for the most part, bar fights aren’t good for business. So seek out the assistance of the bouncers or even the bartender, it is their responsibility to eject the individual, not yours.

#5 – Prepare For The Attack

5 – Prepare For The Attack

If nothing is working up until this point it is time to prepare for the inevitable attack. Get yourself in a defensive posture, one that is not menacing – you don’t want to look like you are encouraging the fight. Firmly plant your feet, lean forward slightly and position your open hands, palms forward, by your face. As one last ditch attempt to stop the fight loudly say, “Stay back! I don’t want to fight you!” Worst-case scenario, you will draw the attention of onlookers, who can be used as potential witnesses to vouch for your self-defence claim, if things should become ugly. Best case, the attacker will either back down or the bar staff will intervene.

#6 – Prepare For The Attack (2)

6 – Stay Alert

Strength in numbers usually prevails, so even the drunkest of bar bullies will usually not start a fight unless they are confident in the support of their friends, should the fight not turn in their favor. You will need to stay alert, keeping an eye on both your attacker and those people around you. It is also a good idea to know where all the exits are located, should you have the opportunity to make a quick getaway.

#7 – Act Crazy

Crazy Face with Sunburn

You are now locked eye-to-eye with your opponent and there is no turning back. Your only hope is that the bar staff, or the attacker’s more level-headed friends, will intervene before the fight can begin. You still have one more option however. You can try to make the drunkard back down by acting crazy. So give your best and loudest war cry. If it doesn’t intimidate your opponent at least it will draw more attention to you.

#8 – Defence Is The Best Offence

8 – Defence Is The Best Offence

Being on the defensive is a not only a great tactic for self-survival, but it will also help you if and when the law gets involved. If you are seen to throw the first punch, more often than not, you will be considered the instigator. Not only will you get ejected from the bar, or worse banned, but you may also face legal ramifications. So be on the defence and keep moving, it’s harder to strike a moving target. Look for cues when your attacker is going to throw a punch. If you followed the advice in the first tip you shouldn’t have a difficult time dodging what comes at you.

#9 – Act Decisively

Face

You can only stay on the defensive for so long. If help has yet to arrive you may have to take matters into your own hands. Counter your defence with an offensive attack. It greatly helps if onlookers have witnessed that your attacker has landed the first punch, but this doesn’t mean you have to take one square in the face. As Zaron Burnett III advices, “When it comes to getting hit… counter to every instinct you have, don’t avoid it. Instead move towards it. When some dude throws an obvious punch, shove your forehead at his fist. This will hurt him far more than it does you. Then when your attacker recoils in pain- it’s your turn to swing.”

#10 – There Are No Rules In A Bar Fight

Punch in the Throat!

For good or for ill, you are now fully committed to this bar fight, at least until the bouncers break it up or one of you goes down. The trick is to make sure that your attacker is the first to hit the floor. In order to survive you must keep fighting until one of these things happens. Remember, there are no rules in a bar fight, so strike vulnerable areas first. A head butt to the chin, knee to the groin or even thumb to the armpit will not only be unexpected, but it will also hurt like hell. You can also use your open palm, targeting the bridge of the nose or even the throat. It’s amazing how fast a bar fight ends when your opponent realizes he is having trouble breathing. It’s also not a bad idea to continually scream, “Stop! I do not want to fight you!” throughout the ordeal, even while you are pummelling your opponent. Surviving a bar brawl is not only about getting out with your skin intact, it’s also about saving you from spending a night in jail, or worse.

#11 – Protect Yourself From Weapons

whisky and bar fights... I

One of the biggest risks of committing to a bar fight is the use of weapons, and we are not only talking about the conventional type, such as guns and knives. In a bar, everything is a potential weapon, from bottles and beer mugs to pool cues and barstools. You not only have to worry about your opponent drawing a weapon, but also their friends. This is why staying alert is so important. If a weapon is drawn try to distance your self as much as possible from the person wielding it. You should never use a weapon yourself, not only for the legalities involved, but also the weapon can always be knocked from your hands and used against you. If you can’t get a physical barrier between you and the weapon-wielding attacker, use a chair or barstool to keep them at bay until the help arrives.

#12 – Fending Off Multiple Attackers

12 – Fending Off Multiple Attackers

There may come a point in the bar fight, especially if you are winning, when you may have to face multiple attackers. If this happens your best defence is to keep your back against a wall so no one can attack you from behind. Just as in dealing with an attacker wielding a weapon, try to distance yourself and get some form of physical barrier in between yourself and the attackers. The most important thing here is to make sure you stay on your feet, if you fall you’re done for.

Although we may have given you some of the worst-case scenarios, for the most part bars can still be a very fun and safe place to party. The staff will do their best to break-up any fights that occur as quickly as possible. However, in the advent that you have to commit yourself to a bar brawl, stay alert, be on the defence and remember, the best way to survive a bar brawl is to not get into one is the first place. So be the bigger person, and just walk away.

Ten Weirdest Bar Restrooms

Whether you call it a bathroom, restroom, washroom, lavatory, or any other of the long list of names for the potty, one thing remains the same; these rooms are evolving to a much larger and greatly wackier state of existence. The bathroom is not a simple toilet, sink, and mirror. It is now a statement, a message, or merely an opportunity to release artistic imagination in a room that is seen by everyone, at one point or another, who visits the establishment. Bars are quickly becoming notorious for these eccentric bathrooms. Here is a list of ten of the largest or strangest restrooms from all corners of the world.

1. Bar 89 – Bar 89 is located in New York City. This is a state-of-the art restroom equipped with clear glass stalls that will frost when the stall door is shut. Customers must trust the stall walls to remain opaque in color and provide them the privacy they need while in the stall; a bathroom for technology lovers and believers.

2. Zeta Bar – Zeta Bar is located at the Hilton in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The urinals in this men’s bathroom are ornamented with beautiful women paying close attention to what is happening around them. The walls are comical, but it is the ego-boost that most men do not mind repeatedly receiving.

3. Monteith’s Brewery – Monteith’s Brewery is located in New Zealand. These restrooms do not offer the typical toilet that most of us are accustomed to; instead bathroom goers will do their business into a keg. Now isn’t that appropriate, a brewery with keg toilets? This bathroom is quite ironic as customers urinate into the very same place that made them need to go to the bathroom to begin with.

4. The Rivershack – The Rivershack is located in New Orleans. The restroom is bizarre, but it does obtain quite a reaction from customers. With a body outline on the floor of the men’s restroom and a trough for a urinal, what is there left to say?

5. Vampire Bar – Vampire Bar is located in Barcelona. This bar’s restroom is home to a large tiger monument that emits water like a fountain. The sculpture is undeniably a work of art that is worth a glance.

6. Safe House – Safe House is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and is one of the most amazing spy-themed restaurants that includes passwords, hidden rooms and disappearing ink throughout the restrooms. Just to get into the restroom a patron must make their way through a variety of different mazes and avoid trick doors.

It’s one of the most luxurious restrooms anyone can ever step into as it has just about everything anyone would ever need while going to the restroom.

5 Types of guys you’ll see picking up women at a bar

Bar Friends

Guys love bars for one reason: women. Well, the hi-def TVs that are permanently tuned to sports channels are also nice. Also, there’s nothing like devouring grease-laden bar food after a few ice cold drafts…okay, okay, guys like bars for many reasons. Women, however, are a top priority. In any bar you will invariably see five types of guys on the prowl for female, ahem, “companionship.”

1. The Alpha Male

Mighty Maru the Alpha male...

The Alpha Male is the most notorious of all guy types. He has studied books that promise to reveal the secrets of picking up women. He can be identified by his confident swagger and superior attitude. He can also be spotted when, inevitably, a woman turns him down. He will show an expression of puzzlement as he realizes that all of those books and websites were a scam designed to suck up his paycheck.

2. The Bro

Grease

These guys spend countless hours applying hair gel and the cloud of cologne that hangs around them, if ignited, could level a city block. Bros are most often found in noisy bars. The loud noise will prevent a woman from realizing that she is talking to a man who spends more time primping in front of the mirror than she does.

3. The Pseudo-Intellectual Hipster

THOR IS A HIPSTER

The Hipster is more common now than ever before. They constantly smoke hand-rolled cigarettes, wear glasses without lenses and sport mustaches that haven’t been in style since the Civil War. They aren’t likely to pick up any women because they refuse to drink anything other than cheap beer. Women are not impressed when a Hipster offers to buy them watered-down swill.

4. The Big Shot

This guy has it all. He shows up in a sports car and flashes cash. He will be quite successful with the ladies. He will buy them expensive cocktails and offer them a ride in his flashy car. However, as soon as he brings a lady home, she will quickly discover that he’s got the money, but all of it is spent to compensate for other, ahem, shortcomings.

5. The First Timer

Photobucket

You’ve got to give this guy some credit. He is trying, after all. When he approaches a woman, one of two outcomes are possible. She will either quickly brush him off or be charmed by his effort. Upon his first romantic success, his shyness will disappear and he will rapidly transform into one of the above categories. It’s a vicious cycle.

So, there you have it. The next time you’re at a bar, keep an eye out for these fellows. Odds are that you can size them up quickly. What you do with this information is, of course, up to you.
